Yet more Vulfpeck? Why yes please! Really I don't think we could get enough. The whole crew comes along with those same amazing qualities as ever. Stanley with amazing vocals, Dart remaining a rock of bass rhythm, Katzman bringing his particular songwriting and performing. The cast of Vulf is variable in the best of ways, always bringing potential for fresh flair. All playing into the ideal of funk that Vulfpeck has chosen. A little weird , a little feeling, and a lot of vibes.
If you've listened to any other Vulf then you know what to expect. This is yet more of the same. In a good way I assure you. You will also find a couple takes on the individual member's songs as is often the case. In Heaven and What Did You Mean By Love, by Joey Dosik and Theo Katzman respectively, appear as welcome additions to the album. Alongside these are new tracks. Sauna is a great opening vibe. Lovely organ and lyrics characterise it well. Earworm is a typical kind of Vulf odd, but it works. I'm not sure it quite lives up to it's title, but I do like it. New Guru is a great new track. I can't help but feel the groove and huge energy of the track. Stanley delivers his usual excellent vocals here. Simple Step does some fun things with rotary sounds and I have to say I'm always down for some good saxophone. Don't miss out on Cory Wong's unmistakeable strumming style here either. Serve Someone and Miracle riff on a sort of gospel funk vibe. It comes out with good result. Stanley's voice and lovely harmony really make these tracks.
It is hard to go wrong with Vulf. They are all great musicians and seem to pull out fun pieces every time. Are they always doing something novel? No. But, what they put forth is highly listenable. It feels familiar and understandable. That said, there is something to the style and production of Vulf that is distinct and fresh. Even when they do covers it can feel distinct. So when they are treading familiar ground it can still come across quite well. So why this album for the first feature of the year? I thought carefully about where I wanted to start the new year. This album presented itself in singles so well and I couldn't help but choose it when it fully released. It is filled with great positive energy and forward motion. This seems like the right start. Winter and dark months can really drag you down. So maybe the best move is to but a move. Go for it. Go for the new year!
